Coverstitch hems,
filmed on our floor.
A short loop from a coverstitch station on our Dongguan floor. Coverstitch gives a hem that stretches with the fabric — the finish on activewear hems, cuffs and waistbands.

Construction notes
The hem that stretches with the garment — and how to spec it.
A coverstitch hem is what stops a legging cuff or a sports-bra underband from snapping its threads the first time it is pulled on. Needle threads on the face, a looper underneath covering the raw edge. This is how we approach it.
Where it goes
- Hems on leggings, shorts and tops — a stretch finish that recovers.
- Cuffs and sleeve ends on long-sleeve training tops.
- Waistband and neckline attachment, and binding run through a folder.
- Topstitching an overlocked seam flat, for a cleaner face.
Spec it like this
- Stitch type: ISO 4915 class 406 (two-needle) or 407 (three-needle) coverstitch. Name the needle gauge, e.g. 1/4" or 3/16".
- Hem depth: give the finished turn-back in millimetres on the measurement chart.
- Thread: textured polyester or nylon in the looper so the hem stretches without cracking.
- Finish: say whether the edge is raw-cut and covered or folded once — it changes the look and the hand.
Check it on your sample
- Pull the hem to the fabric’s working stretch: no popped stitches, no laddering.
- Look at the face: needle lines parallel and even, no skipped stitches where the hem crosses a side seam.
- Turn it inside out: the raw edge fully covered by the looper thread.
- After one wash: the hem lies flat, with no rippling unless a lettuce edge was asked for.
Three stitches, three jobs
| Stitch | What it does | Typical use on activewear |
|---|---|---|
| FlatlockISO 607 | Joins two panels butted edge to edge; smooth on both faces. | Leggings inseams, sports-bra side seams, panel seams against the skin. |
| Coverstitch This clipISO 406 / 407 | Hems and binds; parallel needle lines on the face, looper covering the raw edge inside. | Hems, cuffs, waistband and neckline finishing. |
| OverlockISO 504 / 514 | Joins and neatens the edge in one pass; leaves a small ridge inside. | Internal seams where touch matters less; efficient in bulk. |
Questions buyers ask
Is this footage of your own factory?
Yes. It was filmed on our sewing floor in Dongguan, not stock footage. You are welcome to book a visit and see the same stations in person.
Can the hem be in a contrast colour?
Yes. Needle and looper threads can be colour-matched or a deliberate contrast — put the thread colour on the tech pack.
What does it take to see this on my own design?
Send a Development Brief with sketches or a tech pack. Samples are US$50–100 per garment piece; bulk starts at 150 pcs per style per colour.
