How Long Does a Clothing Sample Take?

A practical OEM calendar: proto in 7–14 days when fabric is ready, plus fit rounds, SMS and PPS — and what actually slows sampling down.

Buyers ask how long a clothing sample takes because sampling is the critical path before PO. For activewear OEM, a realistic answer is a range — not a single number — driven by fabric availability, development depth and how many fit rounds you approve.

The four sample stages buyers should plan

StageTypical timingPurpose
Proto / development sample7–14 daysProve silhouette, fabric hand, basic construction
Fit sample+5–10 days per roundSize, rise, length, mobility
SMS (salesman sample)+10–18 daysSell / shoot closer to bulk
PPS (pre-production)Before bulk cutLock colour, trim, labeling

What actually adds days

  • Custom dye or new knit development before cutting
  • Unclear size chart ownership or missing graded specs
  • Brand approvals sitting in email for a week
  • Trim / branding (heat transfer, woven label) not specified early
  • Peak calendar congestion (SS/AW handoffs)

A realistic calendar for yoga / activewear OEM

When fabric is in hand, many Dongguan programs deliver a first proto in 7–9 days. Plan buffer for one fit revision. If you need SMS for a trade show, reverse-plan from the ship date and freeze comments earlier than you think.

For how sampling fits factory selection, see our activewear manufacturer guide and yoga wear MOQ notes.

How to brief so sampling stays on schedule

  1. Send a one-page brief: category, target retail, must-have fabric traits
  2. Attach size chart + reference garment photos (not only flat sketches)
  3. Confirm colour standard (Pantone or physical) before lab dips
  4. Agree written turnaround and revision rounds up front

One to two fit rounds is typical for library styles; new developments may need more.
