AQL Quality Control for Apparel Buyers

What AQL means on a garment PO, which defects are major vs minor, and the QC questions to ask before your first bulk cut.

AQL apparel inspection is how buyers turn “nice sample” into repeatable bulk. If AQL is missing from your PO, you are negotiating quality after a dispute — the expensive way.

What to put on the PO

  • Inspection standard (e.g. AQL 2.5 major / 4.0 minor)
  • Defect classification list for your category
  • Measurement tolerances from the tech pack
  • Colour standard + ΔE expectation
  • Inspection window (inline + final)

Major vs minor — activewear examples

TypeExamples
Critical / majorBroken stitches at stress points, wrong size labels, severe shade lots, holes
MinorSmall oil marks removable, slight uneven topstitch within tolerance

Connect QC to development

AQL only works if the tech pack and PPS are clear. Use our tech pack checklist and compliance notes in GOTS vs OEKO-TEX.

FAQ

What AQL is common for apparel?

Many programs use AQL 2.5 for major defects and 4.0 for minor — confirm in writing.

When should inspection happen?

Inline during production and final pre-shipment; don’t wait until goods are sealed.

Who pays for third-party inspection?

Usually the buyer; some factories support joint inspection — agree before PO.

What about colour QC?

Approve lab dips / bulk lots against a standard with ΔE tolerance, not only visual memory.
